A Look Back - The Original Easy Bake Oven

There are somethings that I remember vividly from childhood, like things I wanted for my birthday or for Christmas. No matter how tight money was when it came to our wish list we usually got something we wanted. I remember seeing the Easy Bake Oven made by Betty Crocker advertised on television, and from the moment I saw it I just had to have it.
It came with tiny boxes of Betty Crocker cake mix, icing, a bowl, spoon, spatuala, and two tiny round baking pans. The oven was heated with a light bulb, and all you had to do was add a few tablespoons of water to the cake mix, stir it up, put it in the cake pan and bake for a few moments in the oven. While it was cooking you mixed up the icing in a bowl, and once it was done iced your cake! The servings were small, but oh so good! When I got mine for my birthday I couldn't wait to get home from school and mix one up. It was the best present I ever got.
The one in the photo above is the one I had. When I think of children today and all the technology that they have it makes me appreciate the Easy Bake Oven more. Not that technology is a bad thing, but sometimes the art of creating something sustainable, something we can touch and taste builds our sense of creativity, our self esteem and cultivates a feeling of wonderment. I'm not sure what ever happened to my Easy Bake Oven, but it is one of my fondest memories of childhood.
